At Auto Safety Driving School, our team of instructors is not only highly qualified but also deeply committed to fostering safe and confident drivers. Each instructor is state-certified and brings decades of driving experience to the classroom and behind the wheel. To ensure the utmost safety and professionalism, all instructors have undergone rigorous background checks through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, including fingerprinting and a detailed review of their history.

Our fleet of vehicles is exclusively dedicated to driving lessons and never used for any other purpose. Each car is equipped with state-of-the-art GPS, dashcams, and hardwired connections to the engine block to provide a secure and reliable learning environment. With our experienced team and specialized vehicles, we’re here to give every student the tools they need for safe, confident driving.

Meet Billy, our Senior Instructor

Billy has been with Auto Safety Driving School since 2016, helping students become confident drivers and supporting parents by emphasizing the responsibilities of driving.

Originally from Charlotte, N.C., Billy grew up as the eldest of seven, learning hard work and respect from his father on their family farm. Warmer weather brought Billy and his family to Florida in 1974, where he settled in Tampa Bay and built a rewarding career in hospitality and sales.

Outside of work, Billy enjoys quality time with his wife, five children, and two grandchildren. He loves fishing, the outdoors, and sharing his passion for faith, family, and community. We’re grateful for his dedication to our students and Auto Safety Driving School!

Colleen

Colleen brings over 35 years of experience from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, where she trained for road tests, issued licenses, and helped clear sanctions. She was also one of five people responsible for developing the department’s curriculum.

With more than 100,000 hours behind the wheel, Colleen combines her extensive knowledge and passion for teaching to help students succeed. We’re proud to have her on our team.

John

John was born into a military family originally from Texas and moved around quite a bit as a youth before his dad was stationed in Tampa, 1968. He graduated from Jefferson High School ‘way back when’. He’s a father of three and a grandfather of six. He’s a BIG Bucs fan, and also loves the Rays, the Lightning, and the Florida Gators. He’s had a number of different jobs in his life, but by far the most interesting was with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for 35 years. We are happy to have him and all his experience at Auto Safety Driving School.

Doug

Born and raised in Maryland, Doug joined the United States Coast Guard after graduating high school. He was assigned to a search and rescue station in Ocean City, New Jersey.

After his honorable discharge from the Coast Guard he joined the Ocean City Police Department and retired as a sergeant in 2008. While on the force he worked undercover narcotics and was a union president and a field supervisor.

Doug also coached girls travel softball for 12 years and after he retired from the OCPD he coached college softball for seven years.

Doug has been married for 39 years and has two daughters and one grandson. Doug holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University. He is excited about teaching the next generation of drivers as he’s seen too much of what can happen during his days on the force with regards to accidents and distracted drivers.

Doug is an avid sports fan and loves the Philadelphia Eagles.

Luis

Luis was born in the United States when his father was the Venezuelan Ambassador to the US. Luis and his family returned to Venezuela where he grew up…until…he was informed, in 1969, by the American Embassy, Caracas that because he was an American citizen by birth…he was eligible for the draft. And, in fact, his draft number came up so he was flown to Miami to be drafted!

Aside from Venezuela, Luis considers himself a native of NYC.

Luis served his time in the US Army as a Warrant Officer and helicopter pilot, receiving flight training at Ft. Walters, Texas and ultimately flew helicopters from 1971-1973 during the Vietnam War. Upon his return to the States he received his degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Luis later earned a commission in the Air Force assigned as a B52D pilot where he served 10 years active and 15 in the USAF Reserves.

In 1990, Luis joined Delta Airlines and flew the friendly skies until his retirement in 2012. He enjoys training and teaching and brings his unique experience to share defensive driving skills with Auto Safety Driving School’s students.
