Tampa Bay communities are taking a significant step toward safer streets following a new round of federal transportation funding aimed at reducing crashes and saving lives. The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded more than $3.6 million to local governments and institutions through its Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program.
This funding supports projects designed to improve roadway safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists across the region, while also strengthening emergency response and data-driven traffic planning.
What the Funding Will Support
The SS4A program focuses on both planning and real-world implementation. In Tampa Bay, funded projects include safer road designs, upgraded intersections, improved pedestrian crossings, and new technology to detect and respond to crashes faster.
Local recipients include Tampa, University of South Florida, Gulfport, and Bradenton, each addressing safety challenges in different ways.
Key Projects in the Tampa Bay Area
Tampa
Tampa received the largest share of funding to support its Whole Blood Initiative, which introduces a critical-care response vehicle staffed by certified medics. The goal is faster treatment for severe roadway injuries and reduced crash fatalities, while also updating the city’s Vision Zero safety strategy.
University of South Florida & Hernando County
USF is partnering with Hernando County to demonstrate a drone-based artificial intelligence thermal camera system. This technology will help detect incidents in real time and improve traffic management along key road corridors.
Gulfport
Gulfport will convert a busy four-lane roadway into a safer, two-lane divided design with a dedicated turn lane. The project also adds pedestrian crossings and collects before-and-after data to measure speed, crash reduction, and pedestrian activity.
Bradenton
Bradenton is developing a comprehensive Safety Action Plan, which includes installing flashing beacons, LED stop signs, intelligent transportation systems, and curb improvements to calm traffic and improve visibility.
