Florida is making a major change to how driver’s license exams are administered. Beginning February 6, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) will require that all driver’s license knowledge and skills exams be given exclusively in English. This update applies to all standard driver’s license classifications and oral exams.
Previously, many written exams were offered in multiple languages. Under the new policy, language translation services will no longer be permitted during testing, and printed exams in languages other than English will be removed from use. While some commercial license exams were already limited to English and Spanish, this change expands the English-only requirement across the board.
Why This Matters for New Drivers and Families
For many new drivers and families in Florida, this change may create an added challenge when preparing for the written knowledge test and road skills exam. Understanding traffic laws, road signs, and testing instructions clearly is essential — not just to pass the exam, but to drive safely on Florida roads.
This update puts more emphasis on:
- Strong comprehension of written and spoken English
- Understanding road rules and testing instructions without translation support
- Being properly prepared before arriving at the DMV
For students who may be learning English or come from multilingual households, extra preparation will now be even more important.
How Proper Training Can Help
At Auto Safety Driving School, we work with students from all backgrounds and focus on clear instruction, real-world driving skills, and test readiness. Our lessons are designed to help students fully understand:
- Florida traffic laws and road signs
- What to expect during the knowledge exam
- How the road test is structured and scored
- Defensive driving habits for everyday situations
With the exam now being English-only, professional instruction can help bridge gaps in understanding and reduce test-day stress. One-on-one coaching allows instructors to explain concepts clearly and make sure students feel confident before they head to the testing center.
Preparing for the DMV Under the New Rules
If you or your teen are planning to take the driver’s license exam soon, now is the time to prepare:
- Review Florida’s Driver Handbook thoroughly
- Practice reading and understanding test-style questions in English
- Get behind-the-wheel practice with professional guidance
- Ask questions during lessons to clarify road rules and expectations
The goal isn’t just to pass the exam — it’s to become a safe, confident driver who understands the rules of the road.
