Drivers traveling across the Howard Frankland Bridge and nearby sections of I-275 in the Tampa Bay area will need to slow down beginning next week. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced a speed limit reduction in two active construction zones to improve safety and reduce dangerous driving behavior.
Where the Speed Limit Is Changing
FDOT is lowering the speed limit to 55 mph in the following areas:
- I-275 from 38th Avenue North to 4th Street North
- Howard Frankland Bridge connecting Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties
Previously, the speed limit on the bridge was 60 mph, and in the I-275 widening project area in Pinellas County it was 65 mph. With this update, both locations will now operate under a consistent 55 mph speed limit.
Why FDOT Is Making the Change
FDOT officials cited increased speeding and dangerous driving behaviors on the newly opened bridge. Because the bridge is wide and open, many drivers have been traveling at unsafe speeds.
Drivers interviewed also reported frequent reckless driving and speeding, with several stating the changes are needed for safety. FDOT expects the reduced speed limit to help create a clearer and more consistent driving environment through the construction zones.
Approximately 19 speed limit signs will be changed within the next week to reflect the new speed limit.
What’s Next for the Howard Frankland Bridge
FDOT confirmed that additional projects are still underway. The express lanes and shared-use path are expected to open around Spring 2026 as construction continues.
FDOT’s Safety Reminder to Drivers
FDOT issued this reminder to all motorists traveling through the area:
“Please remember to slow down, stay alert, and drive safely through work zones.”
Construction zones require extra awareness, reduced speeds, and full attention at all times.
