Last month, a woman called us from Carrollwood, crying because she just got a job offer at Tampa General Hospital—her dream job—but the start time is at 6 am, and no bus route gets her there on time. She was 38 years old and had never driven a car. Ever. Grew up in New York, where you don't need to, then moved to Tampa five years ago and just made it work with Uber and friends giving rides.
She wasn't crying because she couldn't drive. She was crying because she felt stupid for waiting this long and thought it might be too late to learn. We hear some version of this story at least twice a week. Here's what we told her (and what we're telling you): you're not stupid, it's not too late, and you'll probably learn faster than the teenagers we teach.
The thing about adult lessons in Tampa is that nobody talks about it. Your coworkers don't know you take the bus to work, your neighbors think you prefer walking, and your family stopped asking why you always need rides. But here's what we've learned after teaching hundreds of Tampa adults: you're way more common than you think, and you'll probably learn faster than the teenagers.
